Welcome back to our blog! Today, we are thrilled to share the incredible journey of one of our clients who has successfully returned to sports one year after undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery. This client's story is not just about physical recovery, but also about the crucial role that the client-physiotherapist relationship and the mental challenges of an ACL reconstruction play in the road to recovery.
THE CLIENT
Meet Heidi, a dedicated netball player who found herself facing a series of challenges after a netball inversion injury to her ankle in 2022. This injury led her to The Treatment Room, where she began her journey towards recovery. Just when she thought she was ready to return to the court, fate had other plans as she sustained an ACL rupture during her second match back.
Despite the setbacks, Heidi has shown incredible resilience and determination throughout her rehabilitation process. As she nears the end of her rehab journey, let's delve into her inspiring story of perseverance, strength, and the unwavering spirit of an athlete determined to make a triumphant comeback.
Heidi has returned to running & softball with her first charity netball tournament coming up in a few weeks. Nearly a year on Heidi’s head is more in the game than ever. Our session yesterday allowed Heidi to hit PBs in her barbell squat of 65kg, then with the use of Interia Squats this increased up to 85kg!
THE REHAB SESSIONS
The following is an example strength session we are currently completing with Heidi. In addition to this, independently Heidi has a structured cardiovascular, plyometric and agility programme.
Barbell, squats, 12-4 reps increasing weight with each set starting weight of 40kg
Interia Squats 10-4 reps starting weight 65kg building to 85kg
Barbell Hip Thrusts, starting weight 40kg building to 80kg 10-4 reps
Split Squat / Single Leg KB RDL Combo 12KB
Single Leg Hammy Curls
MENTAL CHALLENGES OF AN ACL RECONSTRUCTION
Heidi won’t mind me mentioning a couple of hurdles we faced along the way. Undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery is not just a physical challenge, but a mental one as well. The fear of re-injury, the frustration of not being able to participate in sports, and the uncertainty of the recovery process can take a toll on one's mental well-being. Heidi faced these challenges head-on, with the support of her physiotherapist who provided not just physical guidance, but also emotional support and encouragement.
THE IMPORTANT OF CLIENT-PHYSIO RELATIONSHIP
The client-physiotherapist relationship is at the core of every successful rehabilitation journey. Heidi's dedication to following my guidance, attending regular sessions, and staying committed to their exercises played a pivotal role in her recovery. The trust and communication between Heidi and myself created a supportive environment where progress could be tracked, setbacks could be addressed, and goals could be set and achieved.
THE CHAMPIONS RETURN TO SPORT
After a year of hard work, dedication, and resilience, Heidi has successfully returned to sports. The joy, satisfaction, and sense of accomplishment that comes with returning to something they love is immeasurable. Through consistent rehabilitation, gradual progression, and a positive mindset, Heidi has not just recovered from their injury, but has emerged stronger, both physically and mentally.
THE TAKE AWAY
The journey of Heidi post ACL reconstruction is a testament to the power of perseverance.
